Ms Qin Haidi, Chinese Lead Teacher at Little Skool-House (Yishun Community Hospital), is known for her empathetic and child-centric approach to teaching. She believes that early childhood educators are not only responsible for imparting knowledge but also for guiding children in managing emotions, building values, and developing confidence. Her strong collaboration with parents plays a key role in helping children overcome language and cultural barriers. For example, preschooler Julian Hwang successfully took on the lead role in a Chinese drama production despite his limited exposure to the language, thanks to the trust and bond Ms Qin had built with him over the years.

With 13 years of experience, Ms Qin focuses on recognising each child’s unique strengths and giving them opportunities to grow. She uses literature, such as the book Olivia, to foster self-esteem and encourage children to appreciate their individuality. She also adapts her teaching to meet children where they are, such as helping a K1 transfer student with no Mandarin background by combining play with learning and assigning her the role of “teacher’s helper” to boost confidence and participation. Through encouragement and tailored guidance, Ms Qin helps children build resilience, leadership skills, and a love for learning.

Beyond her teaching, Ms Qin values the mutual respect and appreciation she shares with parents. Their words of encouragement, whether through surveys or simple daily exchanges, give her strength and warmth, especially during challenging periods such as illness outbreaks. She notes that parental cooperation in reinforcing health measures and nurturing habits at home creates a consistent and supportive environment for children. Despite the demands of her work, Ms Qin finds fulfilment in witnessing her students’ growth, which reaffirms her belief that “everything we do is for the child’s development.”
